Official Confirmed UDFA News/Signings thread for the Giants

Matt in SGS : 4/27/2013 6:23 pm
As has been the case for many years on BBI, after the draft there will be a flurry of UDFA news that comes in, usually from small towns/newspapers, etc. Now with Twitter that will also add a new element of guys confirming their signing.

This thread is intended for actual news, with sourcing on who the Giants have signed. Not who we want them to sign, etc. If history is a guide, by the end of the night or early morning, we should know the list of all the UDFAs who the Giants will sign heading into rookie camp.

So once the 7th round is over, start your Googlin' and Twitter watching and post it here.

Tweedy was not a regular starter at VT but he spearheaded the teams punt coverage, and the Giants have been looking for a solid gunner on specials. David Tyree was the best theyve had over the past decade or so and he was succeeded by Devin Thomas, whose play helped the Giants get to Super Bowl XLVI.

Tweedy has size (62″, 197) and speed (a 4.39 40 time) and can also be counted on to dial up a safety blitz. Against FSU last November Tweedy had six tackles, 1 1/2 that went for a loss.

Giants have 77 players on their roster and seven draft picks. That leaves room for 6 UDFAs. Total roster limit is 90 players.

I've got 77 as well on my cap list. Add 6 picks, and the total is 84. Don't forget that the Giants may still go out and sign 1 or 2 veteran free agents. A LB like Karlos Dansby would make sense.

Everything should shift to need now:
Optimus-NY : 4/27/2013 8:27 pm : link
Let's concentrate on the available players that fit a need.

What are those needs? Let's list them:

OLB
MLB
CB
WR
OT
TE
RB

We're going to be signing less than the usual amount of rookie undrafted free agents this year simply because of the amount of players already on the roster (77), including the 7 drafted free agents (84). The roster limit is 90, so we can expect 6 at most now.

If the Giants were to officially sign 6 rookie undrafted free agents tonight, then they'd have to cut someone from the roster if they were to go out and sign any veteran free agents later on this offseason.

sphinx : 4/27/2013 8:28 pm : link
Though Sabino played in every game his first two years on campus, he couldnt get much playing time on defense because of the teams typical stable of veteran linebacker talent. He had six tackles in each of those seasons as a special teams ace, and returned a blocked punt 20 yards for a touchdown against Purdue in 2008. Sabino then decided to take a healthy redshirt for the 2010 season after losing out on the strong-side job to Andrew Sweat during the summer. Though he was in and out of the lineup as a junior (five starts in 13 games played), Sabino showed promise by making 62 tackles, 6.5 for loss, and two sacks. As a senior, Sabino broke his fibula, and only played in eight games. He managed 45 tackles (3.5 for loss) with two sacks and an interception.
ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS Well-built, athletic linebacker who plays on the strong side and in the middle. Fights through blocks in the hole, and is capable of using violent hands to shed and grab running backs. Brings a powerful punch to pulling guards and fullbacks in the run game, and is tough to keep out of the backfield on A-gap blitzes. Shows enough speed to flow with stretch plays outside to make the stop, and hustles to the ball when theres any chance to make a play.
WEAKNESSES Lateral movement might be an issue if playing outside; he might not stay on the field in nickel situations unless he proves the short-area quickness to do so at the next level. Plays with a high pad level, failing to break down in the hole against quicker ballcarriers. Must get his hands up consistently when attacking blocks, whether on the edge or against running backs on blitzes. Underwhelming career.
NFL COMPARISON Nail Diggs
BOTTOM LINE Sabino is versatile prospect capable of rushing the passer, handling tight ends, and holding the point as a strong side backer and also works hard to plug holes when lined up inside. Sabino still has upside, but will need to prove he can play on special teams.

"NFL spokesman Greg Aiello just tweeted that the NFL will increase offseason rosters from 80 to 90 players, effective at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

The move was discussed at the owners meetings last month but was tabled for later consideration. According to Aiello, the NFL Executive Council approved the measure today.

The increase is not as large as it may seem at first. With the 80-player limit, unsigned draft picks and some other players would not count against the limit. Under the new limit, the draft picks and others would count."

2011 in particular had 5 UDFA's make the team and 4 saw time on the active roster:

Hi Pattie
Optimus-NY : 4/27/2013 11:21 pm : link
Figured as much. They've got 77 on the 90 man roster now. The addition of the drafted players, totaling 7, will increase that number to 84 (even though they don't officially count until they're signed, which won't be long from now). That would leave 6. Right now, we've reportedly got 5. 1 more to go maybe?
There's always the supplemental draft in mid-July to help
Optimus-NY : 4/27/2013 11:23 pm : link
supplement the roster too, although it's historically doubtful that the Giants take anyone then. Last guy I can remember being drafted then is Safety, Tito Wooten---and of course Dave Brown before him in '92.

Quote:

STRENGTHS: Athletic Frame and flies all over the field with excellent range and the chase skills to catch ballcarriers from behind. Athletic blitzer and is at his best downhill, working hard to shed blocks with adequate strength and length.
... lacks instincts to start at next level, could be core special teams player...

I agree with Beez. Dieusel (Sp?) reminded me of LT in the explosiveness of his contact. He was like a bullet coming in there. High hopes at this point. Wouldn't it be wonderful again to have a LB with that kind of attack power!?
Diesel's highlight video is very impressive
Occam'sRazor : 4/28/2013 9:21 am : link
Sheds blocks well, moves fluidly around traffic and very impressive closing speed once he has the target infront of him... thats why his hits come with a good pop. Leveled the QB a few times. Good form tackling too.
There was a play in the first few minutes
Montreal Man : 4/28/2013 9:29 am : link
where he leveled the QB, who fumbled, and another offensive guy picked it up and started running, and Diesel got up off the ground and caught him from behind before he even got to the LOS.

Time to get NASTY (Our Summary)...
Those who have not been exposed to James, are missing out on a special player. From a technique standpoint he is one of the most polished cornerbacks in this draft. For what he lacks in size, he has the confidence and the numbers to prove he's amongst the talk of second their corners in this draft. James' ability to read the three-step drop has earned him countless INTs and PBUs throughout his career. In addition, he has punt return ability to add to his impressive resume. Although the former Buccaneer gambling spree has payed off for him throughout his career, he needs to be cautious of receivers who possess quickness with their double moves. James reminds us of David Barrett, minus the long gear, when he was selected in the fourth round out of Arkansas in 2000. We believe James has that kind of worth in this year's draft.

On question of whether unsigned draft picks count....
eagles nut : 4/28/2013 4:29 pm : link
toward the 90-man roster limit maybe things have changed. Last year when move to 90-man roster limit was announced, Greg Aiello of the NFL tweeted this:

‏@gregaiello 23 Apr 12

90-player limit will include active, inactive, practice squad, exempt, reserve lists, unsigned draft choices, franchise FAs.

But now in response to a fan question -

‏@gregaiello 31m

No. RT @shlynch: @gregaiello Do unsigned draft picks count against a team's 90 man roster limit?

So either they've changed the rule within the past year or just Aiello is confused.

Not

but you guys are more intelligent than the average Eagles fan(myself not included of course). There's some smart guys over at the kffl.com Eagles board, but the main board at the Eagles' official website is pretty worthless. Plus, there tend to be some asshats here that have actual inside info that you won't find elsewhere.

That Aiello tweet is weird.

I'd wager that technically drafted players don't count on the 90-man roster until they're signed. Correct, or no?

pretty much a prototypical size-speed combo. Built like a light TE, speed and agility of a much smaller man. Yards per this year was over 18. Has some work ethic questions, willingness to block and to run out plays when he isn't getting the ball, but if he can harness it he has a shot to be a solid contributor.

That's an important bit of information. That means that we add the 7 Giants draft picks from these past few days to the 77 players already on the roster, leaving us with a total f 84 players on the 90 man roster. That leaves 6 open spots.

Marcus Davis is the one player I had slated for us to pick in the 7th round. Now hearing he was picked us a UDFA is totally awesome, guy has awesome tools just needs to get his head on straight, what better place to get his head straight as within big blue's locker room.
